TOP FIVE FINISH FOR KARPENKO - For release – immediately With the 2009 Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series only around the corner, Chace Karpenko, has stamped his authority as a contender with a 5th place finish at the latest meeting, last weekend at Northline Speedway in Darwin. It was a case of 5th’s all night long for Karpenko, who stopped the clocks in qualifying at 12.305 seconds to place fifth in the 14-car field, behind Cameron Gessner, driving for Brooke David and ahead of Luch Monte. The 23 year old was happy with the time but was upbeat about the gap between the top 5. “We were happy with 5th place, the car and track were great, but the difference between 2nd and 5th was just over a tenth of a second, (it’s) just so tight now.” The first of the three heat races saw Karpenko start from the third row. He quickly pounced, passing Farrell, Allan Barlee and Daniel Goldoni, only for a caution period around mid race to compress the field. At the restart, Farrell was allover the back of Karpenko’s Maxim chassis, dicing for lap after lap until Farrell pulled a slide job on the last lap, relegating Chace to 3rd. In heat 2, Karpenko started from outside of the front row and led the race for the opening laps before making an error, spinning his car, which brought out the caution flag and sent him to the rear of field for the restart. He would finish in 6th place, a costly mistake for his points chase. The third and final heat of the night was a more rewarding race. Starting from the inside of the second row and battling with track conditions which were starting to get dusty, Karpenko was trying to catch the leading two of Farrell and Allan Barlee. He couldn’t reel in Barlee and had to settle for 2nd place, Ryan Farrell was the winner. With a track that was going slick, Karpenko lined up on the fourth row for the 20-lap final. At the start, he made a slight mistake in the first corner, which pushed him back two spots, but an early race caution period, went in his favor. He regained the positions after the restart and began to have a fantastic battle with Daniel Goldoni, eventually getting past, before another caution, which sent him back behind the Brolga Homes entry. A top wing adjustment during the caution period helped him power pass Goldoni for 5th place and was carrying tremendous car speed on Allan Barlee who was ahead, but the laps ran out and he had to settle for 5th. After the meeting, Chace reflected on the battle with Goldoni for 5th place. “I had trouble going with Goldoni at the re-start until I pulled the wing back and found the top groove with about 5 to go and the track was dusting up badly, so I had to adjust the car to suit the conditions, he had the car speed, but we got passed him in the closing stages” a drained Karpenko explained. “ There were a few cautions out there tonight, I was getting a little frustrated because I didn’t capitalize on the yellows, on about lap 15 I got going on the top and started going forward, my quickest lap of the race was lap 16 or 17, so it was good to finish strong” he continued. “I’m happy to come away from the meeting knowing I finished strong and learning more about these sprintcars with every meeting. It’s good that we are finishing races and gaining as much exposure for our sponsors as possible.” |
